Fall semester 2008 : The LONDON PROGRAMME

Paris and London are nowadays so close and similar in certain fundamental ways (size and national role) but quite different in attitude and habit. The River Seine has a very different dimension to the Thames and the role played by ‘locality’ is more ambiguous and complex in London. The architectural community in London is more international and the student there tends to respond to a wider set of parameters and design more thoroughly - and this is what we want you to do in our Studio. We hope also that the drawings of Lim and Woods can act as an inspiration.
The medieval London Bridge carried houses on it and in 1996 the Royal Academy held the exhibition ‘Living Bridges’ in which many projects from known architects, including Zaha Hadid and Future Systems, were shown. The subject offers scope for the exploration of dynamics, structures, form and a way of re-thinking the city.

This project is a self sufficient entity.
It's pneumatic envelop has two main function:
- Enable the flotation of the device
- Some compartiments can recolt and store rain and sea water.

After it has been collected, the water is filtred and recycled to
provide the inhabitants with fresh and clean water. Solar captors
are also integrated into the envelop, to restore energy to the
flotting building.
This energy is used for everyday life, but also to activate the
mecanical tentacule structures. These structural elements help
the navigation of the building, in low and deep water.
They can also be used as a fishing device when equiped with a
fishing net.
Moreover, they can also help to keep the water clean, in surface.

Since I already know you and your work somewhat, I can respect the fact that you can probably handle such an ambitious reading of the
programme.
Several objectives need to (probably simultaneoiusly) be pursued.
The degree of 'cellularity' is going to be as key interpretational area. To what extent might there be a 1:1 relationship between the increment of the 'captor' devices and the cellularisation of the skin of the vessel itself?
It is conceivable that a ';run' or 'zone' of the surface might be made
up of 'captor' lined either side by an inflation run or tube : or perhaps more intertestingly, that any rhythm of the fabric might have
a kind of progression like A:B:C;D:C:B;A where "a" is normal skin, "B" is thickened skin, 'C' is support run (air tube ???) and 'C' is 'sucker run'. Not that i am suggesting mere 'stripes'. Perhaps there are tailing-off conditions where B and C merge, etc etc.
The fishing nets could be a 'peacock's tail' situation .
We can go a long way from inflatable-houser- as-boat- with- net as i am sure you are already aware.\A nightmare to discuss this without drawing.....
No scanners here ! Look forward to a proper conversation
