Fall semester 2008 : The LONDON PROGRAMME

Paris and London are nowadays so close and similar in certain fundamental ways (size and national role) but quite different in attitude and habit. The River Seine has a very different dimension to the Thames and the role played by ‘locality’ is more ambiguous and complex in London. The architectural community in London is more international and the student there tends to respond to a wider set of parameters and design more thoroughly - and this is what we want you to do in our Studio. We hope also that the drawings of Lim and Woods can act as an inspiration.
The medieval London Bridge carried houses on it and in 1996 the Royal Academy held the exhibition ‘Living Bridges’ in which many projects from known architects, including Zaha Hadid and Future Systems, were shown. The subject offers scope for the exploration of dynamics, structures, form and a way of re-thinking the city.

Recicled Water Containers Structure / Diego Delgado-Elias

This is the latest exercises on how to attach the chosen component and the search of the lightest structure that will develop better on the water, first a serious of structural ribs that float by the bottles attached to different sides of it. And the second is a model analysis that proves that the component attached tangential as "packing" and folded in a cylindrical way can be self structured.

The Atelier first and foremost encourages individuality in design. The brief given at the beginning of the semester is the starting point of the design process. Its unique purpose is to trigger the students’ own interest(s), which they are then asked to develop. Additionally, the Atelier, which is taught in English, has the chance to be international and counts students from around the world, each bringing their specific skills with them and enriching the diversity of design approaches. Hence the variety of responses to the brief.
